What is GPA?
A GPA (Grade Point Average) is a measure that indicates students’ level of performance over time or over courses in different subjects. Schools, colleges and universities commonly use GPA to measure students’ effectiveness from taking classes in their potential academic program. There are several different scales used to measure GPA depending on the organization, but the most Ccommon scales are:
✅ 4.0 Scale – used in the USA and colleges, universities, and international schools.
✅ 5.0 Scale – used in some advanced placement (AP) and honors courses.
✅ 10.0 Scale – used in India and other countries.
GPA is widely viewed as a strong indicator of student success, and its importance in college and university admission, job opportunities, and scholarship availability cannot be understated.
How to Calculate GPA?
GPA is calculated by assigning grade points to each course based on the letter grade received. The most common method follows this grading system:
| Letter Grade | Grade Point (4.0 Scale) |
|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 |
| A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
Formula to Calculate GPA
For example, if a student takes three courses with the following grades:
- Math: A (4.0) with 3 credit hours
- Science: B+ (3.3) with 4 credit hours
- English: B (3.0) with 3 credit hours
GPA Calculation Example
The total grade points will be:
\( (4.0 \times 3) + (3.3 \times 4) + (3.0 \times 3) = 12 + 13.2 + 9 = 34.2 \)
Total credit hours = \( 3 + 4 + 3 = 10 \)
GPA = \( \frac{34.2}{10} = 3.42 \)
Using a GPA calculator makes this process quick and accurate.
Types of GPA Calculators
There are several GPA calculators available that can work with the unique grading scheme.
1. Cumulative GPA Calculator. A Cumulative GPA Calculator is a calculator that calculates an overall GPA that extends across multiple semesters. It looks at every grade that the student has earned in the time period of the academic grading period.
2. Semester GPA Calculator. A Semester GPA Calculator allows a student to calculate their GPA for a single term or semester. It is simply a useful way for the student to start to monitor their progress throughout the term and towards their academic goals.
3. Weighted GPA Calculator. A Weighted GPA Calculator provides extra weighting to grades that are associated with varying levels of difficulty for classes (ie. honors and AP (Advanced Placement) classes).
| Course Type | Grade A (4.0 Scale) | Weighted GPA Scale |
|---|
| Regular Course | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| Honors Course | 4.0 | 4.5 |
| AP Course | 4.0 | 5.0 |
